2013 Special School Tax Election
What: In December of 2012, the Auburn City Schools Board of Education formally requested that an election be held for Auburn voters to consider a property tax increase to fund the building of a new high school in Auburn, as well as improvements to existing facilities.

The Alabama State Legislature authorized the election in their 2013 Regular Session. At their June 4, 2013 meeting, the Auburn City Council set September 24, 2013 as the date for the election.

Why: Auburn City Schools has been the fastest growing school district in Alabama over the last 5 years. A continuing analysis of enrollment trends and facility usage has consistently shown the need for new classroom space to keep pace with enrollment. Recent years have seen the construction of Richland Road Elementary School and Pick Elementary School, and a planned realignment of grades k-5 will be implemented in the fall of 2013 to maximize classroom space. Current projections show that classroom capacities will be exceeded for secondary schools in the 2015 – 2016 school year. Auburn City Schools has proposed a plan to realign grades 6 – 12 and build a new High School to provide adequate classroom and facility space for students. The plan also includes renovation of aging facilities, including several schools built in the 1950’s and Auburn Junior High School, built in 1930.

What Happens Next? On September 24, 2013, Auburn residents will vote on a 9 mill property tax increase.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: If this property tax increase passes, how much will my taxes go up?

A: A homeowner with a house valued at $214,000 would pay an additional $16.05 per month in property taxes if the 9-mill increase is approved by Auburn voters.
