Director Ron Howard's 1995 drama, Apollo 13, is the true story of the 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission, the mission that coined the phrase, "Houston, we have a problem." An onboard explosion deprives the spacecraft of its oxygen and power supplies en route to its mission, forcing NASA to abort the mission and attempt to get the three astronauts home safely. The film stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton as the Apollo 13 astronauts and Gary Sinise as Ken Mattingly, an Auburn University alum and one of the original astronauts slated for the Apollo 13 mission. Three days prior to the launch, Mattingly was removed from the mission due to potential health concerns only to later assist in solving the problem of power conservation onboard during the mission's re-entry. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won for Best Film Editing and Best Sound.
