What is Green Infrastructure?
Green Infrastructure is both 1) a physical “thing” and 2) a planning and design philosophy. Collectively, it is a system of multi-functional and interconnected natural and man-made spaces planned and designed to operate symbiotically to support and improve a community’s quality of life (hence “infrastructure”). The man-made components may include stormwater management practices that improve urban hydrologic function, greenways and trail systems, and parks and other green spaces, while the natural components may include forest lands, riparian corridors, and waterbodies and waterways. As a planning and design philosophy, Green Infrastructure represents an approach to urban planning that promotes a harmonious balance between the social, economic, and environmental impacts and benefits of growth and development in a community.
What is the Purpose and Objective of the Green Infrastructure Master Plan?
The purpose of the Green Infrastructure Master Plan is to provide a framework document to guide the City toward the implementation of Green Infrastructure practices and to create a more sustainable stormwater management program.
The objectives of the Green Infrastructure Master Plan are to:
- Review the City's policies and regulations for the specific purpose of identifying and removing impediments to the use of Green Infrastructure.
- Develop design standards, guidance, and specifications for the use of Green Infrastructure.
- Plan for the implementation of demonstration projects.
- Provide education and assistance to the development community.
Why are we doing this?
The Green Infrastructure Master Plan is being developed to:
- Better align the City's stormwater management program with the goals, objectives, and vision established in the City's comprehensive planning documents.
- Improve the quality of life of our citizens.
- Address existing water quality impairments and help prevent future impairments.
- Be prepared for potential regulatory changes requiring the use of Green Infrastructure.
