The 2024 City of Auburn Neighborhood Conference will take place Saturday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Harris Center and Frank Brown Recreation Center, both located across from the Auburn Post Office on Opelika Road.

Registration Closed

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the conference will begin with morning refreshments and networking. A brief welcome will take place at 8:30 a.m.

Each participant will attend break-out sessions during the conference, beginning at 9 a.m. Attendees will select their desired work sessions during the registration process. A full list of work sessions is below.

After the work sessions, the conference will close with lunch and a speaker.

Work Sessions

9-10:15 a.m.

  • Understanding Emergency Services: Learn the inner workings of local emergency services and the role of 911 telecommunicators in coordinating assistance. Review the appropriate situations for calling or texting 911, and receive guidelines to help you determine the urgency of your situation. We’ll discuss the importance of clearly stating crucial information needed by emergency responders and how details can significantly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency response. Explore the latest technologies available in Auburn, including text-to-911, live-streaming and more.

  • The Basics of City Planning: Whether it's a development next to your home, a new phase of your neighborhood or a project across town, city planning affects everyone. But it can often be intimidating to understand. Come break down the basics of planning with us and learn about the process of development from start to finish, what role the Planning Commission plays, and how zoning and land use affect how property is used. Walk away knowing how to follow along and be engaged in the future.

10:30-11:45 a.m.

  • Promoting Healthy Neighborhoods: The City fosters healthy neighborhoods by educating residents about the City Code and ensuring its enforcement, particularly regarding property maintenance and hazard elimination. Learn from our Inspection Services team about the philosophy and methods behind their efforts, highlighting how regular inspections and proactive measures contribute to the safety, cleanliness, and overall quality of life in our city.

  • HOA Governing Documents & Responsibilities: Whether you are a veteran homeowners association director or serving on your HOA board for the first time, this session can help you streamline your day-to-day operations and provide you with the confidence to more efficiently and effectively govern your community. Learn about commonly referenced topics in your governing documents, like maintenance, boundaries, use restrictions and amendments. We'll address director/officer roles, meeting processes and preparation and record keeping.

Learn how to navigate local government in this closing talk from David Dorton, the City of Auburn's director of Communications and Legislative Affairs.
